SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - Democracy comes alive when youth transition from classroom instruction to hands-on civic participation. Middle and high school students at Leo A. Palmiter Jr./Sr. High School cast ballots in the California Student Mock Election, experiencing the democratic process firsthand and learning the power of informed voting ahead of the November 3 General Election.
“Voting today made me realize how important every single vote is,” shared a Palmiter student voter. “It was exciting to see how the whole process works and know that our voices and ideas matter.”
The campus library transformed into an official polling station complete with voting booths, paper ballots and ballot boxes. Taking part in the hands-on simulation gave students a look at Election Day while instilling a deeper understanding of civic responsibility, electoral integrity and the value of an informed vote.
“Students had thoughtful questions about what ballot propositions mean, who gets to participate and how votes are tallied,” said Palmiter Principal Brett Homesley. “The mock election gave them ways to explore those questions and see how civic duty works in real life.”
Participating in this event gave students valuable insight into the significance of civic engagement and public service. Coordinated by the California Secretary of State and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the statewide initiative helps youth discover the importance of elections and the power of their voices in the democratic process.
